Ponta do Ouro is located in the Maputo region of southern Mozambique only ten kilometers from the South African border. This quaint little town is a tourist hub throughout the year as South Africans and tourists from afar flock here for the fantastic white sandy beach, spunky dolphins, vibrant corals and generally the great holiday vibe. Rated as one of the top ten attractions in Africa and fondly known as Ponta, the town is a must-see when visiting Mozambique.
Ponta do Ouro meaning "Point of Gold" from early Portuguese explorers that were misled into thinking gold may be found here. What they found instead were dunes rich in black titanium! Surrounded by sea and sand, Ponta is a very traditional town with open-air markets, many little shops and enthusiastic curio sellers.
If there is anything that Ponta do Ouro is famous for it is scuba diving. There are some spectacular reefs in the area with colourful and unique corals, while the marine animals provide endless entertainment. Manta rays, humpback whales and even whale/reef sharks frequent the surrounding waters providing great photo-opportunities. Surf fishing for barracuda, kingfish and bream proves to be a success, with deep sea anglers nabbing marlin and tuna amongst others. Loggerhead and leatherback turtles lay their eggs in the sand during the summer months.
Accommodation in Ponta do Ouro
Ponta offers a good range of holiday accommodation options. There are some modern resorts along the beachfront whilst others date pre-war, but are still functional and comfortable. Guest houses and self-catering homes are readily available but tourists are recommended to bring their own bottled drinking water. There is also a wildlife estate offering excellent accommodation.
